An appeal was submitted before the Supreme Court yesterday (16) requesting to increase the number of judges up to five or more in the panel sat for petitioning signed by many parties against the gazette issued by the President for Parliament dissolution.

Favouring the President’s decision, President of Sri Lanka People’s Front Prof. G.L. Peiris, Udaya Gammanpila, Jagath Wellawatte, Channa Jayasumana and Attorney Premanath Dolawatte have signed for by-laws and made this request from the Supreme Court.

They reason that since the event caused a terrible havoc in the society, the case needs to be examined under a panel of judges comprised by a higher number of judges.

Challenging the Parliament dissolution 12 petitions have been submitted before the Supreme Court on last 12, and they were taken into consideration by Three-Member panel of Judges with the Chief Justice. Accordingly, the petitions were taken into examination on last 13 and restraining the President’s decision to Parliament dissolution an interim order was made valid till December 07.

The petitioning will be taken into course again on December 04, 05 and 06.
