Zika Virus: No Need for Panic - Health Industry

The Ministry of Health says Sri Lankans need not unnecessarily panic over the Zika virus reported in several Latin American countries.The symptoms in adults and children are similar to those for dengue fever but generally milder, including flu-like aches, inflammation of the eyes, joint pain and rashes although some people have no symptoms at all.

The Ministry said individuals should remain cautious is relatives have visited countries affected by the Zika virus for over two weeks.The statement said a blood test would determine if the virus has been contracted.

The Ministry also said expectant mothers suffering complications have not been scientifically linked to the Zika virus in the affected countries.Dosage of Paracetamol has been recommended in the initial stages of the virus.Zika, linked to shrunken brains in children, has caused panic in Brazil.
