War crimes probe, a fully local one - Rajitha

The investigation to be held into war crimes allegations will be a fully local one, says cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said.

In an interview with BBC, president Maithripala Sirisena said the same, while prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, speaking to Channel-4, did not rule out a foreign involvement.

At a media briefing today (28), journalists raised these two contradictory remarks.

In response, minister Senaratne said the government stance was that a fully local investigation should be held, which the PM too, stressed, under which judges would be from Sri Lanka, while foreign technology could be obtained.

He noted the UN has called for a judges panel which it could accept, adding that internationally-recognized personalities like justice Weeramantry could be appointed.

The PM has also said the investigative mechanism could be finalized by May.

National anthem in Sinhala, Tamil

The cabinet spokesman also said a proposal was made to the ministers to approve the national anthem being sung in Sinhala and Tamil languages at the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.

This is one of the proposals submitted by the cabinet subcommittee on building a Sri Lankan identity, he said, about which a final decision would be taken following a discussion between the president and the premier.

Responding to a question regarding the organization called ‘Sinhaley’ Senaratne said that state intelligence has reported attempts by top persons of the previous regime to use extremist groups to create communal unrest in the country.
